Setting: The world of Assassin's Creed is more or less the same as our own, with some key differences; Most major events in world history are assisted or prevented by the Templar Order or the Assassin Brotherhood. This is in order to sway the world to their method of thinking, and, also, to obtain certain items of great power.

The history of Earth is changed by the fact that humans were not the first evolution of this form. Another species came before and created humanity as a docile servant race; limited intelligence, designed to do the things their creators deemed menial. These humans were unable to perceive the First Civilisation, and their masters were looked on as if they were gods.

In order to control their human workforce, the Precursors developed the Apples of Eden, each with a specified purpose, such as controlling the thoughts and bending them to the will of the bearer. This changed, however, when two humans, called Adam and Eve, stole an Apple of Eden, immune due to interbreeding between humans and their Precursors. Soon after, a war between Humans and the First Civilisation broke out.

During the war, a massive solar flare from the Sun eradicated most of the Earth's population, leaving approximately ten thousand humans and far fewer of the First Civilisation. Knowing that they were going extinct, the remaining members of the precursor race decided to dedicate their lives to guiding the remaining humans, who still saw them as gods.

The Precursors seem to be the basis for many of the religions seen in early civilisation, with names such as Juno, Jupiter and Minerva. They mostly faded into obscurity, however, some factions of humanity were able to discern the true nature of the precursors; Namely, the Assassin's and the Knights Templar. They have been able to piece together some of what happened.

Discovering the hypnotic effects of the Pieces of Eden on human populace, the two factions began seeking them for their own purposes; The Templars wished to create a perfect world, where order, purpose and control over individuality would reign supreme, whereas the Assassins wished to do the same, but prioritised human free will.

Both orders start early in pre-history, with instances dating as far back as the Achaemenid Dynasty in Iran.

Both the Assassins and the Templars find themselves locked in a seemingly eternal battle, which continues to this very day.

Key moments of history include the Crusades, the Renaissance and reign of the Borgias in Italy, the Golden Age of Piracy around the establishment of the Frontier Colonies of America, right up to the War of Independance and the French Revolution under Napoleon Bonaparte.

The setting Shay comes from is in the Seven Years' War, towards the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, in colonial America. During this period, the Assassins have made some headway in discovering the temples containing the Pieces of Eden, even securing some of the pieces for themselves.

Shay Cormac starts off as a young Assassin under the care of Achillies Davenport and his best friend, Liam O'Brien. He shows some promise as an assassin, the main issue being his lax and carefree attitude, which often attracts more trouble than it necessary. Shay is sworn into the order and tasked with retrieving the Piece of Eden from Lisbon.

Recovering the Piece triggers a massive earthquake in the city, killing thousands. Wracked with guilt, Shay blames the Assassins, accusing them of knowing what would happen when the Piece is removed, as something similar had happened in Port-au-Prince. Feeling betrayed, convinced that the Assassins would sacrifice people to further their goals, Shay defected to the Order of the Knights Templar to prevent the Assassins gaining the location of the remaining temples.

Personality: Shay is shown to be a lax and carfefree individual. He speaks his mind, and damns the consequences, something that's gotten him into trouble on numerous occasions, from enemies and colleagues alike.

He's incredibly optimistic, trusting in his saying that he makes his own luck, preferring to stick to his own independance and ingenuity, rather than be carried on the shoulders of others. He keeps fighting for his ideals, which are mostly good-natured. Being from a poor upbringing himself, with his father away in the Merchant Navy and his mother having died in childbirth, he concentrates on helping others, even after defecting to the Templars, who are the percieved "bad guys."

Eventually, he joined his father on his ship, becoming an excellent sailor, swordsman and marksman, even defending the ship, and his father, from an attack by pirates, being able to shoot the captain and save his dad from being killed. His dad died in a freak storm in 1747 when Shay was only 16.

After his father died, he was found picking fights in taverns and pubs, shattered and desolate by his loss, by his best friend, Liam O'Brien, who had often had to pull his younger friend from trouble in their youth, before he joined his father at sea. Liam helped his friend get back on his feet, and introduced him to the Assassins through his mentor, Achilles Davenport.

Shay had a hard time sticking to the ideals of the Creed, and the tasks the Brotherhood set, often coming to odds with his fellow Assassins over missions and training. This only worsened as time went on.

He is convinced that the Assassins are merely using the Creed as a cover-all for misdeeds, that they're ideology is flawed, and they only care about progressing their own goals, no matter the cost. This pushed him further and further away from the Brotherhood, particularily as he learned about the Assassin-affiliated gangs in New York, praying on the helpless, and the French, also allied with the brotherhood, practicing slavery in Haiti, despite high-ranking Assassins such as Adéwalé working to prevent that. He became deeper entrenched in Templar beliefs, beleiving the Assassins were hypocritical.

As such, Shay is determined to help those worse off. He funded many renovation projects in the North American colonies, stopped oppression by gangs and the British authorities in the streets of New York. He's shown to loathe killing anyone who can't fend for themselves, or is too weak to fight back, one of the key examples being the earthquake in Lisbon. Shay holds himself mostly responsible for killing thousands of people, whilst blaming the Assassins for sending him in there, knowing what would happen.

As a Templar, Shay had to eliminate his former comrades. Despite butting heads with them a few times, he generally liked them, and showed no pleasure in killing them. Even showing remorse as he killed Hope Jensen and, eventually, Liam, who could not be swayed. He doesn't enjoy killing, but knows that, sometimes, it has to be done to save the many.

All around Shay is an interesting individual. He shows compassion for his fellow man, and has no qualms sacrificing what he has to make sure people don't die. He's passionate in his beliefs, and steadfast in his motto of making his own luck. He's a skilled fighter and killer, trained by both Assassin and Templar, yet prefers to forge his own path. He can be brash, or laid-back, or intensely dedicated.

Shay Cormac is a complex man, but, generally, a good one.

Perhaps one of the reasons why Shay didn't follow along with the Assassin's way of life is because he didn't subscribe to their creed from the beginning. It is heavily implied in-game that he only really went with the Assassins because of Liam. The two are described as inseperable, both in childhood, and after Shay's father's death.

It seems that Liam was a cornerstone in that part of Shay's life. The younger man looked up to Liam in many ways, and likely just tagged along to be with his best friend. A few of the older Assassins, such as Hope Jensen and Kesegowasse, noted that Shay would make an excellent member of the brotherhood if he took things more seriously. He talks glib to the elder members, complaining that all they do is train, and other things. It's this atittude which leads you to believe that he's not fully in the Assassin's camp.

The main reason for his defection is the earthquake in Lisbon. Shay is despatched to the European city to locate an artifact from a Precursor temple noted by two items; the Voynich Manuscript and the Precursor box, both of which Shay secured from the Templars before. Once in the temple, he located the artifact, however, removal of the object triggered the Earthquake.

The main reason Shay blames the brotherhood for knowing about the true effect of removing the Piece of Eden from the Precursor temple is due to overhearing a conversation between Achillies Davenport and Adéwalé. They discussed a similar mission in Haiti which also triggered an Earthquake in similar circumstances. He blames Achilles for intentionally sending him on a mission to slaughter hundreds of people, despite Achillies denying this.

Shay vowed not to work under a man who brushed off such loss of life and stole the Voynich Manuscript from the Assassins.

Despite fleeing from the Davenport homestead and being critically injured, Shay did not join the Templars immediately. Instead, he was nursed back to health in New York under the care of a couple; Barry and Cassidy Finnegan. Little did he know that these people were assoicated with General George Munroe of the British Templars.

Whilst being nursed back to health, Shay became aware of the menacing caused by numerous gangs in the city, members of the gang even going as far to attack the Finnegans whilst Shay was recovering. He took down the gang causing the issue, and this was enough to cause the Templars to approach him formerly.

Despite Colonel Monro approaching him, he didn't outwardly explain that he was a member of the Templar order, likely due to fearing Shay's reaction, as the former was trained as an Assassin, but, instead, slowly coerced Shay around to his way of thinking, without revealing his allegience outright.

Shay continued to fight the gangs under Colonel Monro's suggestion, stopping many plots, and even gaining his ship back, which he had lost when fleeing the Brotherhood. All the while unaware that he was, really, fighting for the Templars. Slowly, it is revealed that the Assassins have a hand in many of the gangs fighting in New York, which Shay likely saw as condoning their acts against the helpless populace, further distancing himself from his former colleagues.

Shay isn't formerly inducted into the Templar Order until after the siege of Fort William Henry. Recieving a package from Colonel Monro that explains everything; his part in saving and healing Shay and the fact he was tasked to decode the manuscript he had, explaining he'd been tasked by the Templar Grand Master of the Colonial Rite. Monro also expresses his need for assistance, detailing the dire situation in Albany.

By this time, Shay has already worked for the colonel for a considerable amount of time, and has seen the lengths the Assassins will go to to secure the artefacts first. These actions drive him straight into the arms of the Templars. After breaking the siege on the fort, Shay duels and kills Kesogowasse who implies that Colonel Monro is already dead.

Shay rescues the dying colonel from a burning building. In his dying moments, Monro tells him that Liam stole the manuscript. This was likely the final straw in pushing Shay into the Order.

Shortly after this incident, and being entrusted with Monro's Templar ring, Shay was inducted formerly into the Order. By this point, Shay has been convinced that the Templar ideals are a far sight better for the general population than the Assassins. After seeing the atrocities performed by Assassin-affiliated gangs, he has been convinced of the fact that they will stop at nothing to achieve their situation. In Shay's perspective, the Templars have been painted in a more sympathetic light than his former Assassin colleagues.

Shay continued to work with Templars, even being forced to eliminate his former colleagues, even his best friend, in order to stop the Assassins locating any more temples and causing the deaths of any more people. It seems that Shay has been won over by the Templar ideals because of their similarity to the Assassin's goals. Whilst, in other aspects of the universe, the Assassins are portrayed as the underdog freedom fighters, the situation that Shay finds himself in shows the desperation a faction can be led to in order to gain the upper hand. The Templars and the Assassins have been fighting a war since pre-history, it is not that far a stretch to believe that either side may consider extreme actions to tip the balance in their favour.

Of course, the difference may always be solely in the mind of one man, convinced, through coincidence, grief and a stubborn disposition, that a group is more dark than they seem.

Appearance:

Assassin Killer outfit:

Abilities: Shay was trained as an Assassin, as such he has all the skills of any member of the Brotherhood. he's in excellent physical fitness for his time, an expert free-runner, being able to scale and run across mostly anything.

He has perfected what is known as the "Leap of Faith" to jump from high places and locate soft landing spots to emerge unharmed.

He's skilled at silent kills, using his arsenal of stealth weaponry to dispatch enemies without a sound. He's an expert swordsman, able to hold his own against even the most skilled opponents, a master marksman, and good at hand-to-hand brawls, having survived picking fights in New York's taverns.

An expert hunter, he can take down anything from rabbits to bears. Learning skills from a member of a Native American tribe whilst in the Brotherhood, Shay can put the animals to good use and not waste what was given.

Shay possesses the "Sight," or "Eagle Vision." A sixth sense that is a layover from the Precursors, which has varying additional effects depending on the person. It allows Shay to identify friends, allies and sources of information in the form of blue, red and white auras respectively, but a slight difference being that Shay can tag people as targets, allowing him to follow them more easily. Eagle Vision can be used through walls and buildings, making it incredibly useful.

Inventory: Shay carries the following on his person:

2x Hidden Blades up each sleeve.
1x Templar's Sword
1x Dirk
2x Standard Wheellock Pistols
20x Wheellock Pistol Shots
1x Air Rifle [Experimental]
5x Sleep Darts
1x Berzerk Grenade [Causes the inhalant of the gas to enter a frenzied, berzerk-like state]
1x Assassin Killer outfit.
1x Coin Purse containing over a little over £2,500

Suitability: Shay is a wildcard. Removing him from the turmoil of the Assassin-Templar war may cause him to fall back on his laid-back lifestyle, or he may find a new cause to fight for in Keeliai. Not one for political intrigue, Shay will likely stay away from that arena, likely focusing more on rebuilding and exploration. However, if anything political interferes with Shay's plans, he may well jump right in.

Being a big advocate of improving lives, he'll work towards the path that will improve the lives of everyone involved. If that means helping eliminate the Snakes, so be it. Moving all the Foreigners to a different settlement? Consider it done. It may take a while for him to decide, not wanting to dive in too gung-ho, as that part was tempered a bit with training from the Assassins and Templars, but once he's decided, he'll throw his all into his chosen path, and let nothing stand in his way.

Soul Gem: A green teardrop gem held in place by burnished silver on a simple chord

In-Character Samples:
Third Person (Prose): Okay, this was bad. How was he supposed to know that the thugs he bumped into wanted to give him a piece of their minds? All he did was accidentally shove one of them back a few paces when he stumbled into them. It’s like they’ve never encountered a man staggering free from the alley he just woke up in.

He's currently up on the rooftops of an industrial area, jumping from roof to roof, trying to evade his pursuers as best he can. Realising they're just about managing to keep up, the Irishman grunts, dropping down to the streets, continuing his run, aiming for the more populated areas.

At least there he could blend into the crowds. It didn't explain why he couldn't use his Sense as well as he used to... Or where he was, exactly.

That could wait, though. He needed to find a way out of this before those goons caught up. His Sense might not be working, but his eyes were. Spotting an alleyway that would suit his needs, he carefully navigates the crowds, pushing and shoving in the right places to get people to move, but not draw attention.

He leads his pursuers on a round-about track, aiming to lose them in the crowds. He’s partially successful, ducking into the shadows of the alleyway. The gang members thunder past him, yelling something Shay mostly missed due to the echo in the alley, a language Shay doesn’t understand.
“Well, looks like I’m no longer in the Colonies…” He mumbles to himself, giving it a good ten count before risking moving and peering out from his hiding spot. “But if I’m not… Where the bloody hell am I?”

Sighing, obviously not going to get any answers by remaining in the alley, Shay Cormac straightens and walks back out into the crowds… as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Network: That was... Something.

[A familiar-sounding Irish-accented voice sounds over the network, before the feed clicks on.]

Almost forgot how to do that. [Shay Cormac remarks before sighing, scrubbing a hand over his face.] I guess I went home. It's a head-rush... I, well... I'm fine. I... Guess I caused a bit of a stir, eh? I'm sorry about that.

[An abashed look.]

And Miss Potts? Sorry I missed your Birthday. I'll make it up to you. And... Arno? Deon? I assume you looked after the Morrigan in my absence.

[You better have. Especially you, Arno. You owe him.]

We'll talk later. Whenever you're both free? We have some things to discuss...
